BLMATL Week of Shelter

Picture

CNN has reported that the armed protest by the white supremacists that are responsible for the violence at the US Capitol last week on January 6th, will be showing up in GA's state capitol from January 16th through at least January 23rd.

Our city’s government has been closing down shelters for years, leaving hundreds on the street. As the weather has gotten colder, shelters downtown run at capacity each night which leaves around 200 people unsheltered in the downtown area. Since the election, various members of White Supremacist and Fascist organizations such as the Proud Boys and the III%ers have been “protesting” armed and in large numbers.  Our unsheltered neighbors who live in the surrounding areas are at risk of being targeted by these violent white supremacist groups. They've been disrupting our mutual aid efforts and harassing and using intimidation tactics towards local activists.  Not only is the weather going to be brutal, but our neighbors will be susceptible to attacks by groups who are known to target Black and Brown vulnerable bystanders. We've heard of the tragic and gut-wrenching stories of MAGA supporters and white supremacist groups viciously attacking black people in other cities due to their delusions and we can't stomach the idea of any more missing, beaten, or lynched people in our city.

We are asking you to donate to our efforts to shelter them during the week of January 16-23. Based on last week’s events, this will be a time of uncertainty and extremist violence.

Our goal is to shelter and assist 100-200 neighbors in the Atlanta area depending on how much our community can grow.

$60-100/night x 7-night stay at a downtown hotel
$12/day for hot cooked vegan meals, snacks, and food = $84 per person x 7 days
$94 30-day Unlimited Marta passes
Assistance and resources we will also be offering:
  • Offer a free store for clothing and toiletries
  • Free haircuts
  • Free medical exam
  • Social services (counselors, AA, job searches)

To join our #DefundThePolice efforts
We won't stop saying #DefundThePol(ice)
Not until they stop throwing away money into systems that don’t, and never will, have our best interest. It’s not a secret that the origin of policing in this country started as slave patrol meant to capture fugitives.
Policing and over surveillance isn’t keeping us safer. Reform doesn’t work because the police and the prison industrial complex as a whole is a system of oppression, and therefore, inherently violent. The proof is in the years of increasing police budgets, without anything to show for it. The police fail to protect our most vulnerable neighbors, but instead criminalize them and feed them to the prison industrial complex to exploit their existence.

When we say #DefundThePolice we really are saying Fund our Community, our Education, our Health, the Well-being of our people.

#DefundThePolice = #FundOurFuture

The people need to come first. That’s the only way.

We work hard and long days because we believe there is a better future to reach for. We dream as communities, organizations, and collective bright minds who believe there is a world ahead worth fighting for.

#BoycottStoneMountain

A multi-racial coalition, including #BlackLivesMatterATL, RiseUp Georgia & Southerners On New Ground (SONG) are calling on individuals & organizations to boycott Stone Mountain until the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, an authority of the State of Georgia, agrees in writing to stop offering permits for rallies to white supremacist groups.

Do not visit the park, or book your family unions, picnics, weddings or charity walks there, and encourage others to do the same. Take our online pledge and share it on social media with everyone you know.
